The COVID-19 pandemic and, most recently, the unrest and catastrophic torrential rains in KwaZulu-Natal have placed the Issy Geshen Lamont Home for the elderly under tremendous strain.

The Home provides shelter, safe accommodation, nutritious meals, medical care, and 24-hour quality nursing care to frail elders through the generous support of donors. We continually strive to improve our facilities and standard of care by providing maximum comfort for elders in their golden years, coupled with love, dignity and respect for a good quality of life.

According to Pietermaritzburg Economic Justice & Dignity Group, food prices rose by 10.2% in 2022, spiking higher than inflation for the year. Items like oil, sugar beans, rice, bread and flour have seen price increases between 27% and 52%. Fresh fruit and vegetables, necessary for a nutritionally complete diet, especially for older persons – have also seen major price increases. Fuel continues to be a significant contributor, with petrol almost 27% more expensive than in May 2021.

The recent spike in essential food items and fuel has severely impacted our finances at the Home and has increased our grocery line item budget quite significantly for 2022
